Ernie and the Melbourne Cup

Here's a funny story that I think is worth sharing about our little Ernie and the Melbourne Cup which I forgot to blog about earlier.

Jochen has his last day shift on Sunday 30th October, before he started his time off in anticipation of the little ones arrival. When he got home I asked him if he had put her in the work sweep. His reply was something along the lines of "funny you should say that, wait there I've got something to show you." I was on the couch as wasn't going anywhere. He came back and gave me two pieces of paper which listed who had drawn which horse. Right at the top of the first page next to the name of Makybe Diva (the favourite for the race) was 'Junior Jock'. Wow - could she have done any better. Makybe Diva was attempting to do what no other horse had done before and win three consecutive races and was definitely the sentimental favourite.

So Tuesday the 1st November came and the race was on. We both sat on watched the race live on TV, me cheering like a nutter for a Makybe Diva to win. Wouldn't you know it she did and I think that little Ernie must be one of the luckiest little girls around. I think she was probably the first unborn child to win Jochen's work sweep - which I think is pretty funny. Ernie now claims something like $30. I hope she doesn't spend it all at once, that is if she can manage to get it off her father. The amazing thing is that Jochen had only initially put his and my names in, it was only when the organisers said that they had a couple of extra places that he put in other $2 for Ernie to go in the draw as well.

Anyway because it is such a historic event I thought I'd include a picture of Makybe Diva and her jockey Glen Boss.
